Thanks to Reliance, SMSs to finally cost less than extraterrestrial communication

Yes, its true! SMSs are perhaps the most expensive form of communication available today! Although Reliance is set to make it much cheaper. That small 160 character message takes only 140 bytes, and costs anywhere between 25 paise to Rs. 1 to send, making it cost anywhere between Rs. 1800 and Rs. 7500 per MB! That is approximately the cost of sending messages to Hubble Space telescope. New plans introduced by Reliance though, stand to make SMSs much cheaper. For both post-paid and pre-paid Reliance mobile subscribers, there is a new plan, which at a monthly cost of Rs. 11, will allow you to send messages at 1p per SMS. New unlimited plans allow pre-paid subscribers to send unlimited free messages in a day, with a daily rental of Rs. 1, although unlimited here is still limited by 15,000 messages a month which seems reasonable enough. Mobile Phones Without IMEI Numbers Blocked

Mobile phones in India that do not have IMEI numbers have been blocked. It is being reported that that number could well be 25 million. On October 29th we had carried a report that said that mobile handsets without the unique identification number, which helps authorities track users, will face disconnections by December 1. Holding true to that millions of phones have now been blocked. The International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI is a 15-digit code unique to every GSM and WCDMA and iDEN mobile phone, as well as some satellite phones. It is usually found printed inside the battery compartment of the phone. It can also be displayed on the screen of the phone by entering *#06# into the keypad. This number appears on the operator's network whenever a call is made and the absence of this number makes it impossible to trace either the caller or the phone or to access call details.
