KANNADA MOVIE REVIEW - "DEVARU" IS A REMAKE!

The first thing that comes to your mind after watching a tedious drama like Devaru is whether an ordinary Tamil film like Thalainagaram (2006) (which itself was the remake of the Malayalam film, Abhimanyu) deserved to be remade in Kannada. The film's director Sadhu Kokila has better credentials and talent than the debutant Suraj who had directed the Tamil film. The original Malayalam film with Mohanlal in the lead and directed by Priyadarshan [ Images ] was set in Mumbai [ Images ] while the Tamil film centred around the underworld activities of North Chennai. The Kannada version is a copy of the Tamil film without even a mention of the Bangalore underworld activities. Since the film had a cliched plot, Sadhu could have tried to infuse some interest in the film through an innovative treatment. But Sadhu, who made such an entertaining film like Suntaragaali, chose to be faithful to the Tamil remake and makes only cosmetic changes like having a railway station as the backdrop for the climax (as Bangalore does not have a harbour). He retains the same crudeness that was there in the Tamil film too. Half an hour into the film, the pace begins to drag and this continues till the beginning of the climax. Devaru could have ended as a lifeless boring drama, but for some good fights and a neat performance by Vijay who underplays his role well in the second half. The songs which could have provided some relief to the proceedings lacks colour. Visit the site for more reading!

Stamp in honour of Dr.Rajkumar

Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations, on Sunday, was marked by the release of Kannada matinee idol late Rajkumar’s stamp brought out by the Indian Postal Department. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa released the stamp at a function organised by the Information Department in Bangalore. Rajkumar is the first film personality in the State and the 31st in the country to have this honour. The Postal Department has brought stamps in memory of 40 Kannadigas, who excelled in various fields including M Visvesvaraya, C V Raman, Kuvempu, Shivarama Karanth. Chief Postmaster General (Karnataka Circle) M P Rajan said that stamp priced at Rs 5 would be available in all post offices in the State from November 3. Stamps would be available for sales for about six months. The Chief Minister appreciated the Centre for bringing out the stamp in recognition of Rajkumar’s contribution to the Kannada filmdom. The State government of Karnataka had spent Rs 3 crore so far for the construction of Raj’s memorial in Bangalore. The second phase of construction would kickstart soon. He said Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has allotted 2.5 acres of land in Nandini Layout for the construction of Amrutha Mahotsava Bhavan, which would house a library and other offices related to film activities. A low-key affair In another function organised by the Department of Public Instruction, B S Yeddyurappa appealed to the Centre to ensure that Kannada language was accorded all facilities, as other languages with classical language status. The Centre should not test patience of Kannadigas in this regard.
